Our History |
Judo was originally founded in Japan in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano who was born in Japan on October 28, 1860. In 1882, Kano founded the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo where he began teaching Judo, while also focusing on emphasizing the value of training in attack and defense. He chose to focus on this so that Judo could eventually become a way of life that anyone could participate in and benefit from. Kano had the idea of replacing traditional jujitsu techniques with new training methods so that a majority of the moves could be completed with full force, avoiding injuries. Judo became popular in 1886, after the Tokyo police hosted a contest where the Judo team defeated the most well-know jujitsu school. Judo then became a part of the Japanese physical education system, spreading around the world. 'Judo' means the "gentle or yielding way," and is known to those who participate in it as a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational/social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or a way of life.
